Council approves advisory committee on camp response protocol, appoints members

The Ithaca Common Council unanimously approved appointments to an advisory committee on the city's camp response protocol. The mayor named Matos, Shapiro and Kiel (among others), and the city manager named internal staff and partner service providers to serve, the mayor said during the meeting.
Committee charge and membership: The committee is charged with delivering policy, protocol and resource-allocation recommendations to the Common Council regarding homeless encampments on city land, with attention to the mid-April expiration of the city's Code Blue policy. Mayoral appointees cited in the meeting included Matos, Shapiro and Kiel. City manager appointments named in the meeting were deputy city manager Dominic Recchio; the newly hired camp response coordinator (starting Tuesday, name not announced in the meeting); IURA Director Nels Bohn; Chief Kelly from IPD; Human Services Coalition Director of Housing Initiatives Lidi Barger; and Reach Medical case-management supervisor Anna Vergari.
Term and vote: The mayor noted the committee is authorized to conduct work through Dec. 31 of this year pending further legislative reauthorization; the council carried the appointment vote 10—0 with one member absent at the time of the vote.
Next steps: Staff will notify appointees, convene the advisory group and expect the committee to begin work immediately to develop recommendations for council consideration on the timeline noted.
