County engineers recommend replacing loader engine and buying asphalt after plant leak shuts production

Public works staff told the Bourbon County Commission on Oct. 20 that a loader at the county rock quarry has a failing engine and the county's asphalt plant has a punctured burn-cavity (oil) tank that has stopped asphalt production.
Dustin Hall reported on the quarry loader: a Murphy Tractor quote to replace the engine is $82,702; a head-gasket repair was estimated at about $30,000 but public works staff said a head-gasket repair would be a temporary fix and that several cylinders showed low compression. The loader carries about 10,000 hours and staff said a rebuilt or replacement engine carries a one-year unlimited-hours warranty; staff recommended replacing the engine rather than doing a potentially short-lived gasket repair.
