Board asks contractor to value‑engineer Iturbide monument sign; adds electrical panel and concrete finish to scope review

Rick Solis and staff explained the contractor submitted a one‑sided sign elevation and an LED circular display assembled from tiled LED panels that enlarged the display beyond the original design diameter. Board members said the circle as submitted looks “clunky,” and the digital screen has proven costly and troublesome in initial testing. The contractor reported the digital screen element involves a third‑party vendor and that installing a round, full‑bleed LED would increase time and cost.
The board approved a motion (seconded by Mister Esparza) asking staff to include a self‑consolidating concrete mix for the monument pedestal to improve the architectural finish, to add the electrical panel into the contractor agreement either by change order or through value engineering, and to return a proposal with costed change options in February so the board can decide what to remove or add. The motion passed on a voice vote.
Board members also requested staff check dimensions and typeface proportions on the plaque (the inscription and dates) so the lettering matches the intended scale, and said the committee that previously vetted design options would be consulted on any scope changes.
Ending: Staff will request cost proposals and revised shop drawings from SSC, confirm geotechnical/foundation needs, and return recommended change orders and final designs to the board in February.
