Consultant Rick Solis of Able City presented concept graphics Jan. 14 for six illuminated wayfinding monuments and a proposed set of directional pole signs for Hidalgo and other downtown streets. The board signaled broad support for the design direction and asked staff to coordinate with the Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) on funding eligibility and placement before bringing a final package back to the board.
Solis said the monuments would be illuminated acrylic panels with iconography and a graphical "you are here" map showing six anchor locations such as City Hall and the Plaza Theatre. He also presented draft layouts for about 15 street directional poles with icon panels for features such as San Agustin Plaza and Water Street. Board members and staff discussed fabrication timelines and vendor lead times; the consultant warned that additional design choices may add production time and cost and recommended moving forward with pole fabrication while finalizing graphic tops so production is not delayed.
Staff said CVB is a partial funder and should review the scope and materials; the board asked staff to send the concepts to CVB and to meet with traffic and other departments on placement. No formal vote was taken; the board planned committee review with CVB and return to the full board in February for approval of final graphics and locations.
Ending: Staff will circulate materials to CVB and city traffic staff, then return recommended sign designs, budgets and final placement options at the February meeting.
