Azusa Unified outlines expanded learning opportunities: $6.2 million supports before/after school, summer and enrichment

District staff presented an update on the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) at the Jan. 14 Board of Education meeting, saying the district receives approximately $6,200,000 to fund before- and after-school programs, intersession offerings and summer enrichment for TK–6 students.
Ms. Camacho, who led the presentation, explained that ELOP funds allow the district to offer expanded seats in existing partners’ programs (including Think Together) and to pay for before-school programming. She said the funding supports academic tutoring and homework assistance, enrichment activities (STEAM, robotics and arts), and student meals during program hours.
Ms. Camacho reviewed program requirements from the California Department of Education discussed in the presentation: programs must be free of charge to participating TK–6 students, the total daily program time (including the instructional school day) should be no less than nine hours, and the district must provide a minimum of 30 intersession/non-instructional days (met via spring-break and summer offerings). She also noted partnerships with the City of Azusa for summer day camp access and free swimming lessons, and mentioned a board-approved contract for an artist residency program (CLAB) funded through ELOP.
Board members asked operational questions about Think Together’s delivery model and seat availability; Ms. Camacho said ELOP funds have allowed the district to add seats and to fund additional before-school programming.
Ending: District staff said they will continue to expand partnerships and enrollments to meet ELOP requirements and return with implementation updates as programs run throughout the year.
