Niwo(t) athletes, coaches recognized after state and national championships

District athletic staff and Niwot High School representatives presented trophies and introduced student champions at the St. Vrain Valley School District No. Re1J board meeting, recognizing state and national achievements from the fall season.
Chase McBride, executive director of athletics and activities, said the district saw unusually high participation this fall and that all 11 fall sports qualified for state competition. He also said the district had three state champions this fall and highlighted Niwot High School’s accomplishments.
Joe Brown, Niwot High School assistant principal and athletic director, introduced the girls gymnastics team and individual state champion Evie Saunders. Coach Purcell described the team’s goal-setting and said the team reached a school-record team score of 181.9 and won the state title; Evie Saunders earned an individual all-around state title as a sophomore.
The board also recognized Niwot’s cross country program. Coach Kelly Christiansen said the boys team won the 5A state championship in its first year in the classification and later won a national championship; the superintendent noted it was the first time a Colorado high school had won the national title. Addie Ritzenhaim, a junior and 5A individual state champion, told the board she committed to Northern Arizona University and was described by staff as a former NXN (Nike Cross Nationals) champion.
Board members and administrators praised coaches, parents and students for their work and dedication. The board took photos with the teams and students after the recognitions.
