The Tavares City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to authorize city staff to submit a $25 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Wekiva Trail Extension Project.
City staff said the application will be submitted in partnership with Lake County and the City of Mount Dora for segments of the planned trail; staff recommended council approval. The staff presentation said the council previously authorized pursuit of a $25 million RAISE grant on Dec. 4, 2024 and that a new resolution was needed to finalize the joint application. A staff member noted the city had received a letter of support that same day.
The resolution (2025‑01) directs the city administrator to submit the application and authorizes the administrator or designee to execute related supplements. Councilmember comments during the item praised staff work on the application; the council approved the resolution without recorded opposition.
If awarded, the federal grant would fund portions of the Wekiva Trail Extension project; staff did not provide a local match amount at the meeting. The council did not take additional financial action at the meeting beyond authorizing submission and acceptance of the grant if awarded.
