MNPS recognizes student-athlete, Tom Joy and Percy Priest schools at board meeting

Metro Nashville Public Schools’ Director of Schools Dr. Adrienne Battle recognized student and school achievements during the board’s awards and recognitions segment.
Joshua Sams of Pearl‑Cohn High School was presented the 2024 William E. Hume Award, which honors an MNPS senior football player who exemplifies sportsmanship, academic excellence and team contribution. Dr. Battle said Sams ranks in the top 5% of his class, has been a team captain in football and track, and has received multiple Division I football scholarship offers.
The board also celebrated Percy Priest Elementary School for earning the district’s first grief‑sensitive schools grant and designation from the New York Life Grief Sensitive Schools initiative. Percy Priest plans to use grant funds to create “Hart’s Garden,” a memorial garden at its new facility where students and staff may place decorated stones in memory of a loved one.
Tom Joy Elementary School was recognized as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence (Beacon designation) after a national validated assessment that measured nonperformance areas such as school organization, curriculum, family partnerships, and indicators of success. Dr. Battle noted Tom Joy’s focus as a digital literacy and leadership magnet and praised principal Dr. Shelly Hood and the school staff for their work.
The recognitions concluded without board action; the items were presented as awards and did not require a vote.
