Montgomery County Council and County Executive proclaim Jan. 13‑14, 2025 as Korean American Day

Montgomery County commemorated Korean American Day at the County Council session on Jan. 14, 2025. County Executive Marc Elrich and County Council President Kay Stewart presented a proclamation recognizing the anniversary of the first recorded arrival of Korean immigrants to U.S. territories on Jan. 13, 1903, and honoring the contributions of Korean Americans to the county.
Judge Park introduced community leaders who attended the ceremony and acknowledged representatives from the Korean Embassy, Korean Community Service Center, the Montgomery County Korean American Association, Korean American Senior Citizens Association of the State of Maryland, Koreatown committee, Korean American Foundation of Greater Washington, and other civic organizations. The Consul General of the Republic of Korea expressed gratitude for Montgomery County’s ongoing exchange and collaboration with Korea; he noted delegation visits in 2023 and 2024 and said he expected continued cooperation on economic and cultural ties.
The proclamation text recited the history of the first arrivals and recognized Korean Americans’ contributions in fields including science, medicine, government, the military and the arts. County leaders and community representatives posed for photographs following the presentation.
The event was ceremonial; no legislative action was associated with the proclamation.
