CIBOLO, Texas — The City Council considered three traffic-striping options for Green Valley Road at the Schwalther Intermediate School entrance, discussed trade-offs between visibility and maintenance, and voted to table the item while staff returns cost and replacement data.
Public-works staff presented three alternatives: - Option A: restriping to narrow/clarify lanes and remove a separate turn lane into the school (estimated at about $18,900), - Option B: restriping plus small raised pavement markers (“buttons”) to mark lane edges (add ~ $1,000), - Option C: restriping with taller, removable “candlestick” delineators to make lane separation more physical (estimated at about $23,467).
Council discussion focused on safety, whether drivers should be permitted to make left turns out of the school, the long-term maintenance cost for physical delineators (which can be damaged and require replacement), and the effect of additional curbside equipment in neighborhoods with limited parking. Some council members preferred the candlesticks as the most effective physical deterrent; others favored the lower-cost markers or directing funds to road resurfacing where pavement is in poor condition. Several members also argued that enforcement and clear signage are part of any solution.
Council ultimately made a motion to table the item and asked staff to return with additional information on replacement costs and ongoing maintenance for the physical delineator options. The tabling motion passed unanimously.
