A resolution (No. 707) introduced at the Jan. 8 charter meeting urges the state legislature to pass S8756 and A8902C to authorize New York City to equip Department of Sanitation street sweepers with cameras to enforce street-cleaning parking rules.
The sponsor told the council the change is aimed at addressing widespread noncompliance with alternate-side parking regulations that prevents sweepers from accessing curbs and keeps streets dirty. The sponsor cited local enforcement statistics, saying that in one precinct the NYPD issued “251,000 parking summons in 24, including 1,250 in just 1 block,” and said enforcement alone did not move the streets to get them clean.
The resolution requests state authorization for camera systems on vehicles operated by the Department of Sanitation so cameras could document parking violations that hinder street sweeping; the transcript records the introduction and rationale but not a council vote on the resolution at the Jan. 8 meeting.
