Council member Lewis introduced Intro. 1162 during the Jan. 8 charter meeting, a bill that would require the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to report annually on suicides that occur in New York City with demographic breakdowns.
Lewis told colleagues that existing mortality data include only a “sliver of information” on suicides and that a more complete dataset—reporting on age, ethnicity, gender and other factors—would help advocates and service providers target resources to communities and populations most at risk.
The transcript records the bill’s introduction; no committee action or vote was recorded on Jan. 8.
