A county staff member identified in the meeting as Joby presented the request and said the county removed furnishings from the general construction contract to get clearer construction pricing and to seek competitive bids on furniture separately. Joby said existing perimeter offices with newer furniture will keep that furniture, but offices being converted from cubicle space to individual offices need appropriate, modular office furnishings. The procurement sought a base package for the new individual offices with alternates for a few additional offices.
Joby told the board the low bidder, All Makes of Des Moines, supplies HAWN‑style products used in other county buildings. The current low‑bid total with some chair replacements is $69,682.10; Joby asked for a not‑to‑exceed amount of $75,000 to allow limited contingency for additional chairs. He said project construction bids came in well under budget and purchasing the furniture now would keep the overall remodel within the project's $930,000 budget.
The board approved the purchase on a voice vote (Bridal, aye; Basil, aye; Merkin, aye). Joby and staff will proceed with purchase and installation under the approved spending authorization.
Why this matters: separating furniture from the construction contract reduced the risk that a general‑contract lump sum would inflate furniture prices, county staff said. Authorizing a not‑to‑exceed amount preserves limited contingency while keeping the overall remodel within budget.
