District: PowerSchool incident had 'very little effect' locally; board asks for data-privacy briefing

Superior School District officials addressed board questions about a national security incident involving PowerSchool during the Jan. 13 meeting and recommended a staff briefing for trustees.
David Seed, director of business services, and other staff told the board the district uses PowerSchool primarily for student information (attendance and grades) and that the vendor-level incident affected other districts more severely. The board was told there is "very little effect on us," and that the district does not use PowerSchool for broader business or HR functions that some other districts do.
Erin Schilling (data/privacy team, name given in the meeting) offered to brief the board. "Erin Schilling will be happy to do that. We have a we have a data privacy team that we're very, very strict on any software applications, anything that that we allow our students or staff to use," she said. Board members asked for a possible presentation in February, and staff agreed to plan a session that could include discussion of controls, vetting practices and whether a closed session is appropriate to protect student data.
Board members also noted media inquiries and requested clearer communications for families about what, if any, personal data was affected locally. District staff said they would follow up with a more detailed explanation and a planned briefing by district technology and privacy staff.
