Committee asks staff for 2024 service-request report and debates advisory boards for special-tax districts

Members of the Miami Lakes Neighborhood Improvement Committee asked town staff for a report showing resident service requests submitted through the town’s online platform from Jan. 1, 2024 to Dec. 31, 2024, to identify recurring infrastructure issues such as damaged sidewalks, drainage and tree concerns.
A committee member said monitoring the town’s reporting platform would help the committee choose topics for an upcoming HOA-focused meeting and prioritize sidewalk, drainage, underground utilities and other recurrent topics raised by residents. The committee voted to table the topic until staff can provide the requested report.
Separately, several committee members expressed concern about a recent council decision to dissolve certain advisory boards that represented special-tax districts (used historically to oversee lake maintenance for areas without active HOAs). A committee member described the prior boards as a vehicle for residents to present consolidated feedback to council and said the boards’ removal reduced formal resident representation for lake maintenance, citing visible weed growth near Lake Patricia as a symptom. Members said they will discuss drafting a letter or presenting at a workshop if residents wish to seek reinstatement or another local mechanism for oversight.
Committee members also discussed an upcoming town workshop on special tax districts and lake maintenance and encouraged committee members to attend. The committee agreed to add the advisory-board concern and the request for the 2024 service-request report to the next agenda.
