Neighborhood committee approves letter asking council to fund Aiden lifering program

The Miami Lakes Neighborhood Improvement Committee on Wednesday approved a letter to the Town Council asking the town to allocate funds for a lifering program to honor Aiden and improve waterway safety.

Committee member Isabella Corso read a draft letter that described Aiden’s actions and asked the council to cover the cost of placing five life rings in town. The draft said each ring costs $395 and the committee planned to place them at five locations.

The committee agreed to include the letter in the committee’s next “reports to council” submission and to present the item at that meeting. A member made a motion to approve the draft letter and members voted in favor by voice; no roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.

Committee members discussed whether to list individual signatures on the letter or to sign on behalf of the Neighborhood Improvement Committee. Isabella Corso said she would finalize edits (removing one word, “recent,” and adjusting the ending), circulate the revised letter to committee members, sign it, and include it in the committee’s report to council.

The draft letter referenced other municipalities that have installed similar lifesaving equipment and framed the request as a modest expenditure that would both honor Aiden and improve safety at local waterways.

The committee also discussed whether the town manager or town staff could act on the request before the council meeting if the letter is submitted ahead of the scheduled council agenda; a staff member said they could not confirm that in the meeting and suggested submitting the letter through the clerk so council and management would see it before the report to council.

The committee recorded no further conditions and will forward the finalized letter as part of its report to the council.
