Board preview: strategic‑plan study sessions start Jan. 21; nine initiatives to be reviewed through May

District leaders told the board Jan. 14 the first of four strategic‑plan study workshops will begin Jan. 21 and run through April–May, covering nine active initiatives and progress‑monitoring plans tied to the district strategic plan.
Everett Public Schools staff previewed a series of strategic‑plan study sessions the board will use to monitor progress on district initiatives. Chief Operating Officer Larry Fleckenstein told the board on Jan. 14 that four workshop dates will carry presentations from initiative owners, with the series concluding in May.
The workshop schedule begins Jan. 21 with two presentations: the expansion of early learning work (moving from pre‑K/K to grades 1–3) and the district’s safety framework for emotional, behavioral and physical safety. Future sessions will cover monitoring essential practices, career pathways and continuous growth, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and multi‑tiered systems of support, grading and assessment practices, personalized learning instructional practices, and culturally responsive customer service practices.
Fleckenstein said the district has 27 strategic plan initiatives overall, 12 of which are operationalized and nine active this year. He described the study sessions as an opportunity to see both celebrations of progress and the measures the district will use to track improvement. Presentations will show how the district monitors “how we know we’re getting better” using established metrics and by connecting to the student information system development.
The board was told an 18‑month process to extend the strategic plan will begin shortly; that work includes planning/data collection, strategy development and initiative design leading to a refreshed plan on the 10‑year cycle the district follows.
