Commission approves three-year settlement with Police Command Officers Association

The Birmingham City Commission on Oct. 6 approved a settlement agreement with the Birmingham Police Command Officers Association covering seven rank officers (captains and lieutenants). The collective bargaining agreement runs through June 30, 2028.
Key terms presented by staff include wage increases of 3.5% for the current year, 4% for the next year, and 3.5% the following year; an optional employer contribution of up to 5% to the employer 401(a); increases to long-term disability and life insurance coverage; the addition of Juneteenth as a holiday and one additional personal day for vacation accrual calculations; a $25 increase in holiday premium pay for certain holidays; and a $150 increase in the annual uniform allowance. The agreement also includes language adjustments to comply with the Earned Sick Time Act and waives the short-term disability waiting period for childbirth recovery.
Staff said the estimated fiscal impact for the current budget year is about $74,000 and that amount was included in the wage adjustment account during prior budget work. A roll-call vote recorded all commissioners in favor.
The commission authorized transfer of funds from the wage adjustment account (101.0-272.000-709.0000) to implement the agreement.
