Sponsor withdraws school-zone expansion bill to pursue more comprehensive pedestrian-safety legislation

Delegate Delia Cohen asked the subcommittee to strike House Bill 1801 from the docket; the bill would have allowed localities to extend school-zone boundaries from 750 feet to as much as 1,500 feet. Cohen said she discovered conflicting legislation and intends to use the off-session to draft a more comprehensive pedestrian-safety bill addressing cameras, school crossings and unintended consequences.
A resident of Roanoke, Barbara Dirk, spoke in support of the sponsor and described neighborhood safety concerns near Crystal Spring Elementary School. The committee approved striking HB 1801 from the docket by a recorded vote of 8-0.
The sponsor said the measure will be reworked into broader legislation to be considered in a future session.
