Commission reviews KLM Lodge interior flooring plan; staff to monitor installation

Commission staff and Parks & Recreation presented an interior flooring update for the KLM Lodge at the Jan. 14 meeting of the Hinsdale Historic Preservation Commission.
Staff said the project will remove existing carpet in circulation areas and refinish original wood treads uncovered under the stair carpet. Parks & Recreation proposed a herringbone‑pattern laminate for much of the rentable interior space; staff said the historic tile at the main entrance will be preserved and not replaced.
Staff said the department consulted local preservation craftsmen and contractors, including a local preservation consultant and contractors experienced with Zook‑style homes, and supplied a sample piece and photos for commissioners to review. Commissioners asked whether additional tile stock would be purchased to maintain dye‑lot consistency for future repairs; staff replied that extra tiles would be purchased and that installation is planned for February with an expected one‑week install window aimed at being completed before the next rental/wedding season.
Members discussed whether stairs would be re‑carpeted; staff confirmed the existing wood beneath the stair carpet will be refinished and that no new stair carpet is planned at this time. Staff said some areas under the existing carpet may be concrete rather than wood and will be addressed as needed.
Staff offered to share before‑and‑after photos and make the space available for a commission tour after installation. The commission did not take a formal vote; the item was presented as an informational update.
