Centre County proclaims January 2025 National Blood Donor Month; Red Cross cites more than 3,000 units collected

The Centre County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 14 adopted Proclamation No. 2 of 2025 declaring January 2025 National Blood Donor Month in Centre County following remarks from the American Red Cross.
Megan Switzer, representing the American Red Cross (Central Pennsylvania chapter) and speaking as a Centre County resident, told commissioners that from the start of the Red Cross fiscal year on July 1 to date the chapter has held 101 blood drives in the Centre County area and collected more than 3,000 units of blood. She said the chapter has 138 volunteers in the Centre County area and has responded to three disasters during the same period.
"We just want to thank everybody for your support of the Red Cross," Switzer said. "In Centre County alone from July 1st ... we have been able to hold 101 blood drives, through which we've been able to collect over 3,000 units of blood and that's actually the highest count in all of our regions."
Commissioner Concepcion and Commissioner Dershow both underscored the importance of maintaining a steady blood supply. Commissioner Concepcion noted that it is important to donate during "good times" rather than waiting for an emergency, and Dershow said blood is needed for a range of situations from childbirth to surgery.
The board moved to adopt the proclamation. Commissioner Concepcion moved to adopt Proclamation No. 2 of 2025 and Commissioner Dershow seconded. The motion carried and the board adopted the proclamation.
The proclamation recognizes local Red Cross volunteers and encourages residents to participate in blood drives; Switzer also noted the Red Cross mobile app as a resource for donors to find local drives and receive eligibility and appointment reminders.
Motions and votes on the proclamation were taken during the proclamation portion of the meeting; the board recorded the motion, second and adoption during the public session.
