Marathon County reported its first large batch of tax‑foreclosed properties sold through Wisconsin Surplus, with 12 parcels fetching a combined $274,288 in winning bids.
Kim (real property staff) told the committee the county listed 12 of 19 tax‑foreclosure parcels in the first batch and sold all 12; deeds and tax transfers are being processed with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue. Additional parcels from the fall tax‑foreclosure list will be listed after sheriff’s‑office evictions and title work are completed. Staff said three parcels are scheduled for sheriff’s‑office clearance within a week, and one larger parcel is under review by the highway and facilities departments because of a right‑of‑way question.
The vendor Wisconsin Surplus placed for‑sale signs and managed auction timing and logistics; staff praised the vendor’s responsiveness. Committee members asked whether the sale proceeds will cover outstanding taxes and whether any surplus must be returned to former owners; staff said they are working with Mike’s office to compile the full accounting for all 19 parcels and will report the debt and any required excess‑fund procedures at the next meeting.
Staff also said that combining adjacent parcels had helped sell certain properties more easily. The county plans several additional batches of listings in 2025 to try to return tax‑foreclosed parcels to productive use and back on the tax rolls.
