The recognition highlighted Givens’s ambitions and classroom behavior. "I wanna play basketball. I wanna be a doctor or a nurse and then I wanna go to school for cosmetology," Givens said. She also told the assembled audience that she helps others, listens in class and avoids trouble: "I do my work. I help others. I listen in class. I don't get in any trouble. I'm helpful." Givens said her younger brother, Isaiah, who has autism, inspires her: "My little brother because he has autism and the stuff I do, he can't do." She added she was "surprised and happy" to receive the recognition.
A teacher who spoke during the spotlight said Givens is "motivated in many ways, but most of all from within her own family" and called her "a true Tiger from Otis J Brock Elementary School." The teacher added that Givens "makes my job a little bit easier because of how responsible she is, respectable, and how driven she is," and praised her ability to lift others: "She is just really fun...you can count on her to, you know, make you smile." The teacher closed by saying, "Greatness lies within her."
