Alamogordo adopts resolution declaring District 1 vacancy; sets application and appointment timeline

The Alamogordo City Commission adopted Resolution 2025-2, declaring that a vacancy exists on the commission for District 1 and establishing the timeline and application requirements for filling the seat.

Rachel, city staff, explained the process: “This resolution is to declare the vacancy of the District 1 position. The resolution must be adopted by the Commission within 15 days of the vacancy. The Commission will appoint the eligible candidate at the last meeting of February 25th, because it's 30 days after the adoption of the resolution. If the Commission does not appoint on the February 25th meeting, then the Mayor will solely appoint on March 11th. The person appointed shall fill the position till the next regular local election.”

Rachel said candidates must reside in District 1 and submit a packet by Feb. 14 that includes a letter of interest, a declaration of candidacy, a disclosure form and a voter registration affidavit; packets will be available in her office and posted on the commission page. She said staff will confirm candidate eligibility and that applicants who submit complete forms will be scheduled to speak before the commission.

Commissioner Reardon moved to approve Resolution 2025-2; Commissioner Burnett seconded. The motion passed 6-0. The resolution and the meeting record establish the Feb. 14 submission deadline, a Feb. 25 commission appointment meeting, and a March 11 mayoral appointment if the commission does not appoint by Feb. 25. Rachel said the appointed person will serve until the next regular local election in November, at which point an elected candidate will serve the remainder of Commissioner Paul’s term as applicable.
