The Alton Selectboard voted Jan. 14 to waive a $122.27 interest charge for a taxpayer at 314 Big Bond Island after the taxpayer and the tax collector cited a delivery issue with the U.S. Postal Service.
Jen Collins, the town’s tax collector and town clerk, prepared a memo and attached a letter from the taxpayer describing the issue. Collins told the Selectboard that notices had been mailed as usual and that late bills had not been a recurring problem for the account. “There’s never been any late bills. It’s never been a problem before,” Collins said.
Selectmen discussed broader postal delays affecting the state and nation and agreed it would be unfair to penalize an individual for failures of the mail. One Selectman moved to waive the interest charge of $122.27; another seconded the motion, and members voted in favor.
Nut graf: The board approved the waiver on the basis of the taxpayer’s documented claim about postal delivery and the tax collector’s memo; the motion removed the $122.27 interest assessment for this account.
During discussion the board noted the town’s usual notice procedures and the taxpayer’s supporting documentation. The Selectboard’s motion to waive the fee carried without recorded opposition.
Ending: The Selectboard did not identify any policy change; the action was an individual waiver and staff confirmed the matter was resolved for the 314 Big Bond Island account.
