Beaufort County libraries launch winter reading challenge, set talks and workshops

Amanda (library director) announced a winter reading challenge running Jan. 15–Feb. 15 that asks participants to record at least six hours of reading over the 30-day period to be eligible for a prize drawing.
The library will provide downloadable reading logs on its website, printed logs at each location and a paper log in meeting packets. Completed logs entered at library locations will put participants into drawings for bookstore gift cards; the draws will be held at each branch and are funded by local friends groups, Amanda said.
The announcement also listed soon-to-be-held programs and speakers. On Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. at the St. Helena Library, Tindagi Bailey will present research about Betty Gardner drawn from the library archives. A program on venomous snakes by Sheila Gregory is scheduled to visit the Port Royal, Hilton Head and Beaufort libraries. The library is hosting an environmental-education series in partnership with the county public works and recycling office that will cover “Stormwater 101,” “Composting 101” and “Recycling 101”; library staff said the Bluffton session attracted a large audience when it was first presented.
Staff also announced a postpartum support group meeting at the St. Helena Library on the first and third Tuesday of each month; the group was connected to the library through Leadership Beaufort and is intended as a peer-support resource for people experiencing postpartum challenges.
Community programs include the 38th season of BookSandwiched In, starting Monday, Jan. 27, at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) at noon. Organizers said the series will include in-person talks on Mondays and that replays will be posted on the library website.
"We are going to encourage people to read between today, January 15th, and February 15th. Here's the kicker. We're asking that you read 6 hours," Amanda said during the director's report.
The announcement emphasized the role of the library’s volunteer friends groups in funding presenters, prizes and smaller projects such as benches and bike racks at branches.
Programs and logs are available through the Beaufort County library website; specific event dates, times and locations were read aloud during the meeting and are subject to change; attendees should consult the library calendar for updates.
