Commission hears updates on Andy Romano Park, playground repairs and EV chargers; replacement bids to come

City staff briefed the commission on multiple parks and facilities projects and sought commission awareness of upcoming bid awards and repair work.
City Manager Joyce Shanahan said bids for Andy Romano Park repairs opened with a low bid of $2,100,000, below the engineer's estimate of $2,860,000; the recommendation for award will come to the commission on Feb. 4. Shanahan said the city will evaluate insurance and FEMA options but plans to replace the park's play structure and coordinate playground replacement with planned seawall repairs to avoid repeated closures.
Shanahan also reported that FPL's contractor has installed electric vehicle charging stations in the Millcadet parking area; the chargers await transformer and switchgear delivery and will be operational once the electrical equipment arrives. Assistant City Manager Claire Whitley said work authorization to repair the Magic Forest playground at Nova had been issued; she estimated about six weeks of construction once the contractor begins, and staff hoped work would start within about two weeks.
Shanahan noted the station 91 fire station structure replacement remains planned for the year and that staff will return to the commission with procurement and award recommendations. Commissioners discussed timing to coordinate seawall and playground closures and the benefit of completing related repairs together.
Shanahan and Assistant City Manager Whitley said staff will bring formal bid-award items and replacement authorizations back to the commission with detailed procurement and scheduling information.
