Oregon Senate elects Rob Wagner president; James Manning chosen president pro tem; Obadiah Rutledge named secretary

The Oregon Senate on Jan. 13 elected Rob Wagner president of the 83rd Legislative Assembly after roll-call voting that produced an 18–11 margin over Daniel Bonham. The chamber then elected James Ivory Manning Jr. as president pro tempore and Obadiah Rutledge as secretary; each official was sworn into office on the Senate floor.
The nominations began when Senator Kate Lieber formally nominated Rob Wagner for senate president; Senator Daniel Brock Smith nominated Senator Daniel Bonham. After speeches in support of each candidate, the clerk conducted a roll-call vote. The clerk announced "18 votes cast for Wagner, 11 for Bonham," and the chair declared Wagner elected.
The selection of James Ivory Manning Jr. for president pro tempore followed a nomination by Senator Lou Frederick and a roll-call in which the clerk recorded the yeas and nays; the clerk announced the required majority had been reached and Manning was sworn in. Obadiah Rutledge, nominated by Senator Daniel Bonham, was elected secretary of the Senate by roll call and likewise took the oath of office on the floor.
Chief Justice Megan A. Flynn of the Oregon Supreme Court administered the oaths for newly elected and reelected senators and later administered the oath to the newly elected senate president. Rob Wagner used his remarks after being sworn to outline personal leadership values and asked colleagues to approach their work with "an open mind," "an open door" and "kindness." Senator Wagner closed by inviting senators to spend time with colleagues outside the chamber to build working relationships.
The officers' elections concluded the organizational items required before the Senate proceeds to committee appointments and the regular session schedule announced later in the day.
