Board approves $41,000 state grant to fund victim-notification position

Coconino County approved a fiscal-year 2026 Victims Rights Program award agreement with the Arizona Attorney General’s Office on Sept. 30, a vote the board took during the consent agenda after separating the item for discussion.
Emond Barker, the county attorney, told the board the $41,000 award will fund a position in the county attorney’s office responsible for victim notification in criminal cases. Barker said state and local funding for victim-advocacy positions has been reduced in many jurisdictions and that the award will help the office meet its constitutional duty to inform victims about case developments.
Supervisor Tammy Ontiveros asked the county attorney to explain the award during the consent discussion. Ontiveros then made a motion to approve the item; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Barker said the position should improve victims’ access to updates and help give them closure in cases. No changes to county policy were adopted; the board simply approved acceptance of the award and a corresponding budget amendment.
The board’s vote recorded no abstentions or recusals.
