Las Vegas panel advances ordinances to limit pet sales and raise abandonment fine to $1,000

The Las Vegas recommending committee on Jan. 13 approved two ordinances aimed at reducing animal hoarding and abandonment: bill 2024-45 would limit the number of particular animals pet shops or breeders may sell to one person or household during a calendar year and add quarterly reporting requirements; bill 2024-46 would amend LVMC 7.44.040 to make the minimum penalty for animal abandonment $1,000.
Supporters and animal-welfare organizations told the committee the measures respond to repeated hoarding and abandonment cases, including a recent multi-jurisdictional investigation involving a couple who bought large numbers of animals from a national pet retailer. "I'm here today for our organization to support the 2 ordinances that will increase the, abandonment fine to a $1,000... and also put, more oversight on pet stores," said Bryce Henderson, president of No Kill Las Vegas.
