District to disburse $26,000 in early-literacy awards; accepts local donations

The MSD Steuben County Board of Trustees approved distribution of the district's share of the state's early-literacy achievement grant and accepted several community donations at its Jan. 14 meeting.
Administrators said the district received $26,000.18 from the state literacy award program established by the legislature; the administration recommended distributing the funds evenly among eligible staff who taught K-3 last year and remain employed with the district. The district identified 40 eligible teachers and will allocate the stipend funds after accounting for payroll taxes and FICA in the remaining grant balance.
The board also accepted several community donations and small grants: three classroom grants from the local Community Foundation (amounts of $540.32, $250 and $458.73 were listed in the packet), a $315 annual donation from Hawkins Water Tech intended for winter coats, and a $2,000 annual donation from Weigler and Associates to assist families with negative meal account balances. The administration noted unused portions of the Weigler gift may be deposited into the district foundation to support future needs.
Board members approved the stipend distribution and accepted the donations by unanimous vote.
