District pursues additional manufacturing grants; approves new high-school theater courses

MSD Steuben County authorized staff to apply for multiple grants to expand its advanced manufacturing program and approved new theater course offerings for Angola High School at the Jan. 14 meeting.
The board authorized a new application to the Don Wood Foundation to support additional advanced-manufacturing equipment; district staff said the foundation previously awarded $169,000 to the program and that this request would seek about $125,000 for further equipment purchases. The request would fund equipment for the Advanced Manufacturing Next Level program at Angola High School.
Separately, the board approved applying for a Commission for Higher Education/Connexus grant to support the district's Smart Manufacturing 4.0 pathway. The district described a quote from Amatrol for a mechatronics table and a first robot arm and indicated the grant could award up to $225,000; the district asked permission to seek an amount in the $125,000 range for specific equipment.
The board also approved three new co-curricular high-school courses—Advanced Acting, Technical Theater and Theater Arts—taught by the district's newly licensed theater teacher, Katie Davidson. Administrators said classes require a minimum enrollment (typically 15 students) to run, and they will recruit across grade levels.
Board members voted unanimously on the grant applications and course approvals.
