The Clayton County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 7 to select a vice chair and to make a permanent appointment for the county fire chief.
The board elected Commissioner Elena Reeves as vice chair for the board’s term; Reeves was nominated and received the required voice vote. The clerk and staff noted standing procedures related to rotation and the chair confirmed the selection.
On the same night the board formally appointed Interim Chief Tim Sweat as the seventh fire chief of Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services. Chief Markerson presented the recommendation; the motion to appoint passed by voice vote. Chief Tim Sweat thanked the board and pledged to "work harder than anybody you've ever seen," and said he would continue projects begun under the prior chief.
The board also completed several routine board appointments during the meeting, including reappointing Drew Andrews to the Library Board of Trustees and reappointing Mary Ann Karp to the Solid Waste Management Authority. The board announced it would go into executive session on litigation, personnel and real estate and then reconvened. Multiple advisory-board appointments were approved as noted in the meeting record.
What it means: The vice chair selection sets the board's internal leadership; the fire chief appointment fills a senior public-safety leadership post and signals continuity in departmental projects and facility planning.
