Commissioners add emergency items to allow municipalities' speed-permit renewals and Georgia Power easement for fire-station work

The Clayton County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 7 to add two emergency items to the meeting agenda so municipalities and contractors could meet near-term deadlines.

County staff asked the board to add Resolution 2025-10 to allow municipalities that operate on the county’s public-safety radio frequency to cite the county’s Federal Communications Commission license when applying to the Georgia Department of Public Safety for renewal of their speed-detection permits. County staff said two municipalities were in the renewal process and could lose enforcement authority if the county waited until the board’s Jan. 21 meeting.

Why it matters: County staff said the change is administrative and intended to let local municipalities continue speed-enforcement operations while they renew permits. The board added the item to the consent agenda and adopted the meeting agenda with the addition.

The board also added Resolution 2025-11 to authorize granting an easement to Georgia Power for utility work tied to construction at Fire Station 1 off Garden Walk Boulevard. County staff and the county chief of police said Georgia Power agreed to expedite the work, and contractors needed the easement and related approvals for work scheduled to be completed by Feb. 9. County staff said delaying action until the Jan. 21 meeting could cause construction delays and additional county costs.

The chair asked if there were questions; Chief Markerson joined the discussion and staff described the timing constraints. The board then approved a motion to adopt the full meeting agenda with the two emergency additions; the motion carried.
