Resident urges protection, buffer planting at Tye Sadoway Nature Center

Millie Theiss Martin, who identified her address as 13319 Spring Hollow Drive, spoke during the Jan. 6 public comment period about preservation and buffering at Tye Sadoway Nature Center.
Martin said she first learned about planned changes to the nature center from staff and praised a staff member, Drew Huffman, for showing her future plans. She described the nature center as her late father's dream and said her mother donated land in 1999 to support its development. Martin asked whether the city's tree-preservation policies and proposed buffer-zone protections would be implemented on city-owned properties, specifically naming Tye Sadoway, and requested that existing trees and plantings that provide food and cover for wildlife be retained to visually screen adjacent commercial development.
"I applaud your concern for preserving our trees and the whole ordinance and providing future buffer zones for developments," Martin said. She noted concern about vagrancy and homelessness at city properties but emphasized her priority was conserving native oaks, yaupon and Gulf Coast muhly plantings to soften views of nearby commercial parcels.
Martin also asked that the council consider strategic plantings on all sides of the nature center to buffer views of commercial development. She closed her remarks as the allotted public-comment time ended; the council did not take formal action on her request during the workshop.
