Senate to recess for Gov. Mike Kehoe's inauguration after House adopts SCR 1

The Missouri Senate recessed Thursday, Jan. 9, 2025, to meet the House of Representatives on the south steps for the inauguration of Gov.-elect Mike Kehoe after the Senate received a message that the House had adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 1 and appointed a like committee to act with the Senate, Chief Clerk Joseph Engler told the chamber.

The procedural steps took place after the Senate approved a motion to dispense with further reading of the journal and handled several routine requests. "Mister president, I move that further reading of the journal be dispensed with and the same be approved as though having been fully read," said the senator from Platt. The motion carried after the chair called for the ayes and the ayes were recorded.

Senator Platt also asked unanimous consent to allow the Missouri Highway Patrol to enter the chamber with sidearms; there was no objection and the request was granted. Senator from Shelby sent forward the inaugural committee pursuant to SCR 1; the secretary read the committee membership aloud. The committee list read into the record included Senators Jason Bean, Doug Beck, Mike Burnsketter, Justin Brown, Jill Carter, Mike Bernskoetter, Sandy Crawford, Travis Fitzwater, Lincoln Huff, Patty Lewis, Tony Luetkemeyer, Carla May, Angela Mosley, Maggie Nurrenberg, Steven Roberts, Curtis Trent, Barbara Washington and Brian Williams.

A message from the House, read by the chief clerk, said: "Madam president pro tempore, I am instructed by the House of Representatives to inform the Senate that the House has taken up and adopted senate concurrent resolution 1. Also, madam president pro tempore, I am instructed by the House of Representatives to inform the senate that the speaker has appointed the following members to act with a like committee from the senate pursuant to senate concurrent resolution 1. Respectfully submitted, Joseph Engler, chief clerk." The Senate then recessed without objection until 12:30 p.m. so members could proceed to the south steps for the joint session and the inauguration.

Senator Platt told the chamber logistics matters: senators should have their lanyards (to be picked up in the Senate administrator's office) and that the inaugural committee would meet at the back of the chamber at 10:45 a.m. The presiding officer said the Senate expected to return after the joint session, receive any messages from the House, and then adjourn for the day.
