Martin County Schools set Feb. 11 "Kindergarten Blast Off" to help families register and tour campuses

The event gives incoming kindergartners and their families a chance to meet school administrators and kindergarten teachers, tour classrooms and playgrounds, and learn about extended-day programs, food services and parent-teacher organizations. Schmidt said enrolled students typically receive backpacks filled with books, flash cards and supplies and a T-shirt identifying them as the "Class of 2038."
"You're gonna get a unique experience at every school and a little flavor of the local elementary schools," Schmidt said, describing the event's mix of tours, staff introductions and information about school services.
The district encouraged families to register online before attending. Schmidt said parents should create a Focus account on the Martin County Schools website and register their child through the Focus portal for the home school; school staff at the event can check documents and, if needed, scan paperwork on-site while families attend the event.
Schmidt emphasized kindergarten readiness tips that parents can practice at home, such as dressing independently, using the restroom without assistance, basic letter recognition and clear speech. The district provides a parent checklist in the backpacks and at the events.
The event is aimed at making the first day of kindergarten smoother: "All you have to do is just say bye. Have a great day at school," the host said before Schmidt added, "I think the biggest benefit is to see how amazing our Martin County Schools are and to see that we are absolutely the best choice for your kindergartner." The district asked families to register online ahead of the event so the school can verify documentation and answer questions in person.
