The Community Learning Center, part of the Tooele County School District, brings students from multiple high schools together to take technical classes such as cosmetology, dentistry, robotics, graphic arts and cyber defense. "What's great about the CLC is all the different variety of technical classes that our kids can get into from dentistry to culinary, cooking, all the fun things they create," said Jonathan Marble, principal of the Community Learning Center.
The programs combine classroom instruction with practical projects. Grant Roberts, the graphic arts teacher, said the class uses "professional level software and computers" and provides instruction in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, as well as printing techniques including screen printing. "It gives students a really a leg up on whether they want to go into this type of career or not," Roberts said.
Students described project-based work. "Last year during my cyber technology class, I got to build a personal computer with a group; this year in my Python class, I'm coding and we're building games almost every single day," said Daniella, a student at the Community Learning Center. Staff also pointed to vocational enrollments: "We have probably 60 students in cosmetology. We have a full class of dentists," Marble said.
Staff highlighted social and cross-school benefits of the facility. Roberts said students from all high schools come to the building and often "become instant friends," while Bonnie Peterson, who assists in the barbering program and was subbing in cosmetology during the visit, said the center allows students from three different schools to learn a skill they could pursue professionally or keep as a lifelong skill.
