The Tuscaloosa City Council approved a renewal of the contract with Millennium Risk Managers to administer the city’s workers’ compensation claims at a cost of $394,024.
A city staff member summarized the request and said the city moved from self-insurance to participation in the Alabama Municipal Workers’ Compensation Fund a few years ago; since then Millennium Risk Managers has been handling claims administration. The staff member said the $394,024 is for Millennium Risk to administer and manage claims, while the city’s deductible for actual claims payments is $750,000.
Staff described services the vendor provides, including filing required reports, arranging initial medical treatment at city clinics (Med Center South, Emerge Care, DCH Ocmed), and case management for ongoing treatment. The staff member said the number of claims varies but is “normally around, say, anywhere between maybe about a 100, 150 claims a year.” Council members confirmed the cost to renew is about $50,000 lower than last year and approved the renewal by voice vote.
