The board was briefed Jan. 14 on the Shining Stars Child and Adult Care Food Program renewal and estimated federal award for the 2024–25 school year.
Why it matters: The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a federally funded U.S. Department of Agriculture program that subsidizes meals in qualifying nonresidential child-care settings; grant awards support food service staff and meal costs for participating children.
Jennifer Hannah, presenting for the program, said Shining Stars renewed its application for 214 participants and “we were awarded an estimated $247,173.54.” She provided an eligibility breakdown included in the board materials: 149 participants eligible for free meals, 26 eligible for reduced-price meals, and 39 denied eligibility. Hannah told the board the 39 denied are covered through local NC Pre‑K funds so the children still receive meals.
Hannah explained that CACFP reimbursement does not cover the full cost of operating meals; the district supplements federal reimbursements with funds from developmental-day grants, NC Pre‑K grants and local funds. In response to board questions, she confirmed children in the program receive meals free during the school day and that the award amount can fluctuate as enrollment changes.
No action was required; the presentation was provided to satisfy an annual reporting requirement tied to the grant.
