Goshen wrestling parents club donates competition mat; board to accept $7,082.50 gift

The Goshen Board of Education on Jan. 15 recognized the Goshen Wrestling Parents Club and voted to accept a $7,082.50 donation to buy a new competition wrestling mat for Goshen High School.

The recognition came during the board's re-ordered agenda so student athletes could attend. Director of athletics Durace St. Lawrence introduced the district's varsity wrestling coach, Jared Rynex, who described the new mat and the community fundraising that paid for it. "What we have here is an image of what is going to be our new competition mat," Rynex said, and he thanked the booster club, coaches and families for their efforts.

Rynex said the new mat will be displayed at the New York State championships in Albany before becoming Goshen’s competition mat. The board later approved a resolution to accept the donation and to increase the 2024–25 budget by $7,082.50 to cover the associated expenditures.

The board and district officials praised the boosters and wrestlers for community fundraising and volunteer support that made the purchase possible. The donation acceptance was handled as a formal consent-item motion during the business portion of the meeting and carried with an affirmative voice vote of those present.

The mat donation will be recorded in district inventory and used by the athletic department once procurement and receipt are complete.
