Dr. Decker, presenting the Teaching and Learning report, outlined a new district initiative to identify and support "model classroom teachers" who will serve as exemplars and teacher-leaders across Franklin Special School District.
The program, developed by Dr. Summer Carlton and Dr. Gina Linney in the district’s Department of Teaching and Learning, selected 12 model classroom teachers for the current school year. Dr. Decker said the objective is to identify educators willing to demonstrate exemplary instruction, facilitate professional learning, and support colleagues so effective practices can be replicated across campuses.
Program details provided during the presentation include one day of summer training for the cohort, scheduled cohort meetings (the next was noted in February), public recognition of model teachers via social media and meetings, and an expectation that model teachers will permit classroom visits with 24-hour notice. As part of the application, candidates answered written questions about their interest, past impact, and examples of peer coaching.
Dr. Decker described the model teachers as leaders who “assist others in developing skills by facilitating professional learning, demonstrating exemplary teaching, and acting as teacher leaders on their campuses.” He said the team will analyze data over time to assess the program’s impact on student achievement.
Why it matters: The initiative aims to scale high-quality instructional practices by leveraging teacher leadership and peer learning rather than solely relying on external training. The district plans to monitor and evaluate the program’s effects on instruction and outcomes.
