The Edinburg CISD Board of Trustees on Jan. 14 accepted a $1,000,000 donation from Charlie Meyer and his wife, Virginia Meyer, to fund scholarships for students at the district's career and technology facility.
Dr. Javier Salinas, superintendent, told trustees the Meyers toured the renovated career and technology center and were “very, very impressed with the program.” He said the couple pledged $1,000,000 for scholarships for students who take classes at the facility and that they have already written a $1,000,000 check.
Salinas said the donation has already been deposited and that the district plans to bring the Meyers to a future board meeting for formal recognition when Board President David Torres is present. Trustees moved to accept the gift, the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
The superintendent said the building houses multiple career and technology programs across roughly 11,100 square feet (as described in the presentation) and that district staff and program leaders will administer the scholarship funds. The board did not specify detailed scholarship criteria or an implementation timeline during the Jan. 14 meeting; the district indicated those details will be handled through administration and brought back to the board for any required approvals as needed.
