Council sends proposed change to boards-and-commissions interview process back to committee after debate

At the Jan. 14 work session the council debated whether borough boards and commissions should conduct candidate interviews and forward recommendations to council, rather than having every candidate appear before the full council.
Supporters of the change said committees know the specialized skills their panels need and can better vet technical candidates; several council members said that approach would be more efficient when many openings are being filled. Opponents said sending interviews to committees could reduce public visibility because some committee meetings are not recorded and might limit councilors' firsthand opportunity to assess applicants. Concerns were also raised about ensuring diverse candidate slates and making resumes available to council members.
After discussion councilors agreed to send the matter back to the relevant committee for additional work, including clarifying whether committees should forward a short list of recommended candidates and how council members would review committee interview materials. The Home Rule Charter was cited as the legal framework for appointment authority; council retains final appointment power.
