The board unanimously approved a motion to name the Sparta High School wrestling room the "Mike Montgomery Wrestling Room."
Mister Russ introduced representatives from the Sparta Wrestling Club and the boosters, who presented a formal proposal to name the current wrestling practice room in the AA-gym mezzanine after longtime coach and athletic leader Mike Montgomery. Corey Bowser, president of the Sparta Wrestling Club, said the plan calls for two plaques (one outside the main gym doors and one inside the wrestling room) and a naming sign near the mezzanine entrance. "We can't think of anybody better, and more deserving of this honor than Mike," Bowser said.
Board members offered supporting comments about Montgomery’s long service to the district. The board discussed how a future relocated wrestling room would be handled; district staff said they would collaborate on applying the name to a new space if the room is moved as part of future facility work. Booster representatives said they would cover any additional costs associated with re-signing or moving the dedication if that occurs.
A motion to approve the naming passed by voice vote with the chair calling the motion carried 7–0.
