Administrators said regular-education open enrollment will remain open (no caps) at the district’s traditional schools — Sparta High School, Meadowview Middle School, Hermann and Southside Early Learning. Charter schools (Sparta Montessori, Innovation STEM Academy, and Sales) remain closed for general open enrollment but accept applications or lotteries as determined by their charters. For special-education programs, the district recommended closing all special-education programs to new open-enrollment students because of capacity limits; administrators noted that the law requires the district to review any open-enrollment application and attempt to determine whether the district can meet an applicant’s IEP before denying the request.
Miss Mullen (special-education staff member) is responsible for reviewing IEPs and making determinations when applications are received.
The board voted to recommend the open-enrollment posture to the full board, with the recommendation to appear on the full-board consent agenda.
