Student representatives report debate title, music and athletics updates, hunger drive and other activities
Summary
Student representatives from City High, West, Liberty and other schools provided updates on recent competitions, honor-roll counts, upcoming concerts and community drives.
Student representatives gave updates on extracurricular activities and student-led events across district high schools.
Anya Naso, a City High student representative, reported that City High debate won a state championship and that four debaters were sent with strong results; she also noted successful auditions for regional band (29 auditioned, 21 selected) and City High’s Model UN plans, including international student participation. Naso said Student Senate is organizing the district’s annual hunger drive with donation collection from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First Ave., Hy-Vee and North Dodge.
Nicholas, a student representative from City High, reported academic and athletics highlights: the district had 1,050 students on the honor roll last term; girls’ bowling won the Queen Pin tournament; girls’ basketball was 13–5 at the time of the report; robotics and esports programs are active with varsity and junior varsity teams; and an orchestra concert was scheduled for Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
Liberty High student representatives said Liberty hosted Choirs For A Cause with proceeds going to the Dragon Fly Transplant Fund and noted a new inclusive club, You Belong, that brings together students with and without intellectual disabilities. Liberty’s color guard earned a Division I rating and placed third in its class; the school also plans a canned food drive in partnership with the North Liberty Food Pantry.
