Jamie Haynes was elected chair of the Volusia County School Board at the board’s Jan. 14 organizational meeting, and the board voted to approve the chair’s facsimile signature for checks and teacher contracts under state law.
The board’s vote to elect Haynes as chair came after a nomination by board member Krista Goodrich and a second from board member Jesse Thompson. The motion passed 4 to 1. Board member Brosemer registered a formal objection during discussion, saying, “I will be a hard no on this nomination. First of all, Mrs. Haynes has already been chair for 2 years in a row, and I think that's enough and it's time for another chair. But in addition to that, the way the contract for the superintendent was handled, was, grossly unethical, Unless Mrs. Haynes can tell me when there was public notice given to the board that that contract was even being considered for renegotiation, I have not been able to find it.”
Separately, a motion to elect a vice chair (nominated by Mr. Colon, who nominated himself) passed 3 to 2. The transcript records a roll-call-style vocal vote and the numerical tallies above.
On the board’s consent business, Board Secretary Celeste moved forward an item to approve the use of the chair’s facsimile signature for checks and teacher contracts “pursuant to Florida Statutes 116.34.” The motion, moved by Mr. Colon and seconded by Board member Brosemer, passed unanimously, 5 to 0.
The board opened the meeting, led the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence, and conducted the organizational votes and the statutory signature approval in a single short session. The board adjourned the organizational portion and announced it would immediately convene the Volusia County School Board Leasing Corporation meeting on the same livestream.
