Board approves changing Beach Community Center future‑land‑use designation to parks

The Fort Lauderdale Planning and Zoning Board voted to amend the city’s future land use map to change the Beach Community Center’s designation from commercial to parks, recreation and open space.
Lorraine Tappan of Urban Design and Planning said the change would allow the city to rezone the site to the city’s park zoning district and asked the county to update its map to match. “The intent of the application is for the long term preservation of park and recreation space,” Tappan told the board, adding the amendment fulfills a comprehensive‑plan parks, recreation and open space policy that requires rezoning parks to a parks zoning designation.
Norby Bells, vice president of the North Beach Shops business district and a nearby resident, told the board he supports the rezoning for long‑term preservation and said neighborhood residents and businesses “cherished the Beach Community Center.” The board received no other public comment.
A motion to approve the future‑land‑use amendment carried on a roll call vote. The board recorded affirmative votes and passed the motion; staff said the change will allow the city to return with a rezoning application for the Beach Community Center to a parks zoning district and will request the county to update its map as well.
