Historic Preservation Agency asks to be involved in downtown city hall planning after council funds feasibility study

Members of Lake City’s Historic Preservation Agency raised questions Jan. 14 about the agency’s role in a feasibility study funded by the City Council for potential new city hall construction in the historic district.
A board member asked whether the Historic Preservation Agency would be consulted during the design process if city hall were to be built downtown. Staff said the board should be involved and noted Article 10 of the city code (historic preservation provisions) "does specifically give us power to assist property owners such as the city in the preparation of their historic preservation plans," enabling the board to participate in design review and interdisciplinary discussions.
Staff described the council‑funded feasibility study as an early step and said the city will determine the scope of board involvement as the project moves from feasibility into design. Board members sought confirmation that the building has a sound structural starting point; one member referenced prior hurricane winds and said the existing building "got good bones." No design decisions were made at the workshop.
The Historic Preservation Agency adopted electronically distributed minutes for Nov. 12, 2024 (motion to adopt; second recorded; vote: aye by hand sign, no opposition).
